Impact of Austrian hydropower plants on the flood control safety of the Hungarian Danube reach

Statistical analysis of daily water level data from four gauging stations along the Hungarian Danube reach has been carried out with the purpose of analysing the impact of the Austrian hydropower plants on the floods of the river. Conditional probability distribution functions of annual flood load maxima and annual number of floods were generated for the periods 1957-1976 and 1977-1996. By comparing these distribution functions, it could be shown that the flood load maxima have decreased, while the number of small and medium floods have increased during the past forty years. These changes indicate a decreased rate of flood superposition resulting from the barrages constructed in this period. The significantly decreased flood load maxima indicate that the Austrian barrage system has a positive impact on the flood control safety of the Hungarian Danube reach. Influence des usines hydroélectriques autrichiennes sur la protection contre les inondations de la partie hongroise du Danube Résumé Dans cette étude l'influence des usines hydroélectriques autrichiennes sur le régime hydrologique du Danube a été étudiée par une analyse statistique des hauteurs d'eau observées sur quatre échelles limnimétriques situées en Hongrie. Les distributions des probabilités conditionnelles du débit maximum annuel et du nombre annuel de crues ont été estimées pour la période 1957-1976 et pour la période 1977— 1996. En comparant les deux paires de distributions il apparaît que le débit maximum annuel a diminué de façon très significative alors que le nombre de crues petites et moyennes a augmenté au cours des quarante dernières années. Ces modifications sont dues à la suppression de superpositions d'ondes de crue résultant de la construction, en Autriche, d'un système d'usines hydroélectriques en chaîne. La diminution importante des débits maximums annuels des crues a permis une amélioration significative de la sécurité apportée par les digues de protection contre les inondations sur la partie hongroise du cours du Danube.
